Husband with prostate cancer, severe depression and anxiety

Hi all,

I'm hoping for assume advice. My husband has recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer but was already suffering from severe depression and anxiety. He is saying no to having his depression meds reviewed (they don't seem to be working), counselling and maybe even cancer treatment.

Any helpful advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for posting. I'm so sorry that you and your husband are facing this. A prostate cancer diagnosis is difficult enough on its own, but when someone is already living with severe depression and anxiety, it can feel overwhelming for everyone involved.

I wonder whether he might be willing to speak with his GP or cancer care team about how he is feeling. It is possible that they have experience supporting people who were already struggling with their mental wellbeing before a cancer diagnosis and can help address how this may be affecting his willingness to engage in medication reviews, counselling, and cancer treatment.

You may also find it helpful to seek support for yourself, as you navigate the challenges you are both facing. Cancer Council's Information and Support service 13 11 20 can provide information about counselling and telephone support groups for carers of people affected by cancer. Thank you very much for responding, Elizabeth. I haven't had any luck in getting him to agree to see his GP at all.

As far as his cancer care team goes, he has only met his Urologist so far. I don't think he'd be willing to discuss this but I'll try everything - the problem is getting him to try things. He had a very closed mind to it all.

I currently have an appointment with our EAP tomorrow. Unfortunately this option will finish for me when I'm made redundant in about a month - another issue were having.

I appreciate your feedback.
