My Journey as a Cancer Warrior

I am a 58-year-old male, and my cancer journey began in April when my PSA level, which had previously been within the normal range, increased to 6.8. This raised concern and led me to begin further investigations.

My first test was an MRI, which showed a highly suspicious lesion in the prostate, classified as PI-RADS 5. I was then advised to undergo a biopsy, and the result confirmed adenocarcinoma of the prostate with a Gleason score of 7/10, 3+4.

After this, I was referred for a PSMA PET scan. The scan showed PSMA activity in the prostate gland, which was in keeping with the known prostate cancer. Unexpectedly, it also showed activity in the thyroid gland, which required further evaluation.

This came as a shock, as I had started my investigations for prostate cancer and did not expect another finding. I was then sent for an ultrasound of the neck and further testing with FNAC. The results confirmed papillary thyroid carcinoma.

It was very difficult to accept that I was dealing with two cancers at the same time. My urologist advised that the thyroid cancer should be treated first, while the prostate cancer could be managed for a short period. I was started on hormone therapy to slow down the prostate cancer while I focused on my thyroid treatment.

I underwent thyroidectomy, followed by radioactive iodine treatment. As part of the preparation for radioactive iodine, I followed a strict low-iodine diet for about a month. I was then given 100 mCi of radioactive iodine treatment.

Around three months after my thyroidectomy, once I had recovered and was fit enough, I underwent robotic prostatectomy. Thankfully, the surgery was successful. My surgeon performed a nerve-sparing procedure, and I was fortunate not to have any incontinence issues.

Today, it has been almost one year since my thyroidectomy and around nine months since my prostatectomy. I am now leading an almost normal life.

This is a brief story of my journey with two cancers. I do not see myself only as a survivor, but as a warrior. To anyone going through cancer or any difficult health battle, my message is to stay strong and brave. During such times, mental strength is just as important as physical strength, and sometimes even more important.

I wish everyone fighting cancer courage, hope, and strength. Keep believing, keep fighting, and never lose hope.
