I'm really frightened. I had a hysterectomy 15 years ago and was really well until earlier this year when I started getting spotting PV for no reason. GYN arranged a ultrasound and bloods which were inconclusive. Had a Trachelectomy earlier this week 05/08 but still don't know if it's cancer. I can barely breath, I feel so sick with not knowing.

Hi Evaboo
I was where you are last week waiting for my pathology results to come back after my hysterectomy. However I knew the day they would ring me. Since my diagnosis on the 1st of July I have noticed that the waiting not knowing plus not having any concrete knowledge of when to expect to hear has been the hardest time for me. So I can imagine the torment you must be going through. It's like nothing I have experienced before in my life.
Do you have contact with an oncology nurse who can liase with the doctor/hospital and help you to keep your anxiety levels down? Did they tell you when you should hear? I was told it would take 5 or so days for the pathology work to be completed. I had my op on the 31/8/14 and got my path results 8/8/14.
I have read that getting cancer back is even harder to deal with than the first diagnosis, does this relate to you? Have you tried ringing the cancer council line to share your feelings?
As soon as I found out about my cancer I put counselling into place because I find it helps me.
These are just some ideas. It can be hard to think straight when you are filled with fear and anxiety. My oncology nurse told me to be gentle on myself, to take each day as it comes and to only deal with the facts that you know since anything else is not a certainty.
I don't know if these words will help at all. I am only new to this stuff. There is a gyny group here I have hooked up on but am yet to join a chat session with them, I have been told it gives good support.
Take gentle care of yourself and I hope your news is good.

Juno, thanks for your help. You've no idea how much it helps to know some one is actually listening to me. I take your advice, deal with what I know and try and stop guessing. I have such awful mixed feelings. Because I don't have a diagnosis, I don't have any ONC support. No ones actually said it but it feels like 'you don't need support because you haven't got cancer yet'. I don't know where to start. My hysterectomy was due to menoraghea (exceptionally heavy, no break bleeding) that came to a head and got very ugly. I didn't have time to worry about it. I saw the GYN on the Tues evening and had surgery on the Thurs morning. It never even entered my head that it could've been cancer. I'm such an optimistic and strong person I don't understand why I'm such a mess.

I feel like I have three possible outcomes......1- I might be totally stressing out and then get the all clear next Monday, then feel like a fraud. 2- they find cancer cells in the cervix now they have removed it, the cancers contained and it's all over or 3- I need to move forward and deal with cancer and do what I need to do. When I write it down, it looks like none of its so bad in fact, it looks ok! So why am I this stupid stressed out princess!? What am I supposed to do / think? I just feel like it's all been a bit back to front. Should have had a diagnosis then surgery, but it just didn't stack up that way I guess. Once I get my head around it I'll ring CC but at the moment, words just don't come out. Thanks and stay in touch, let me know how it's going for you too, you matter too!

Hi Evaboo
You are very welcome. I completely understand some of the thought patterns that go through your head at a time like this. I have found it a very personal and lonely experience but I have realised that to talk to someone who has had or is having the same experience is very comforting. Although they have been few.
The uncertainty of a diagnosis leaves you open for a lot of guessing. The way I look at it though, it is important to keep the stress levels as low as possible to remain mentally and physically well. Easier said than done I know.
The last couple of days before results were like and emotional roller coaster ride for me so if that hapens to you know that it is normal to feel that way.
Yes you have those three scenarios and 2 of them are best case the third not so. I hope you fall into category 1 or 2. However they can do amazing things these days and positive thinking is much better for your stress levels and therefore your immune system.
As for being a fraud, when I first recieved my cancer diagnosis I got proactive put all the neccessary services in place and made myself aware of the resources available to me. I am a realist. That included joining CC. I had that very same thought. That I would get it all out there, have the hysterectomy and be given the all clear, problem solved. Me making a big deal out of nothing and hence being a fraud when so many others are really going through the real deal. However it is all scary stuff whether the end resuts are postive or negative. The waiting, medical words, feelings of isolation and loneliness, tests, operations, needles, wondering and predicting so don't be hard on yourself. For me it is certain, I have cancer and there are cancer cells still in me. I am going to radiotherapy. I am waiting for my radiotherapy oncology appointment to find out the legnth, depth and type of treatment to expect. No going back unfortuntely.
I will keep positive its the one thing that cannot be controlled by cancer, I will have down times but I will try to make them as few as possible. I have had some very strong people in my life who have had cancer and they have fought the battle with stregnth and determination, so will I. I have to I have 2 beautiful kids to watch become adults and do all the adult things, I want to get my degree, I want to do honours, I have plans and I have been told plans are good. Thats way more real to me than anything else at this stage of the game. You will find your inner stregnth if you look for it.

You are brilliant! You get me! You're so, so right about dealing with what I know and keeping my stress under control. I'm just not a poor me kinda person but this has really impacted me more than I can justify..... Or explain. My mum is a two-times cancer survivor, many of my friends are survivors, all doing well. I know it's a kink in the road, not a disaster. I just need to believe myself lol.

Hi Evaboo,
I'm in a similar situation, also waiting for results, so understand some of what you are going through.

I had a fine needle biopsy on 21/7 on my neck as I had a cyst there that kept getting infected. I nearly fell out of the chair when the doctor told me a week later that it was cancer! (Lymphoma). A day later I saw another specialist who assured me it was treatable and curable, they just needed to do more tests before I could start treatment.

I then had surgery on 30/7 (excision biopsy). There are over 30 kinds of Lymphoma and the results of this will tell me which one I have, and also what treatement I will be receiving. That was 12 days ago and I'm still waiting anxiously for the results.

I feel a bit silly about being anxious waiting for the results. I've already been given the 'bad' news. I just feel as though I can't move on until I know exactly what it is I am dealing with.

But back to you. I have found the telephone counselling staff at Cancer Council really helpful. Can you ring them and let them know there is a chance you may have cancer? They may be able to offer some practical advice.

One thing that has helped me during the last few weeks of waiting has been keeping busy. I haven't felt well some of the time, but still try and plan something for each day, even small things like shopping, or getting my hair cut, or going for a walk or drive with my husband, cooking etc.

I found nights have been the worst, I wake up at 3am and can't get back to sleep. I downloaded some meditation apps on my phone and listen to them - at least if I can't sleep I can relax a bit, I found focusing on my breathing really helpful.

Every day that passes I think "well, I'm a day closer to finding out what's wrong", which means I'm a day closer to being well again :)

Hope all works out well for you.

First off, thank you for taking the time to put finger to keyboard/screen to reassure me, I really appreciate your support. Secondly, and no less important, you too have my support. It's an awful limbo land were in isn't it. Twighlight zone! Like you, 3am seems to be wake up and worry hour, mine starts anything from midnight onwards but I'm a rubbish sleeper anyway lol. I love the idea of downloading some meditation apps.... Don't kno why I didn't think of it too. Will go and see what I can find but let me know if you've found a good one.
I hope your results come through soon, do you have a date? I'll keep you in my thoughts as we both move forward to a good place.

Thanks for your kind words Evaboo :)

I used to be a good sleeper until recently! Some nights I have been awake all night, on a good night I'll sleep through to about 3am.

The free app I downloaded from the App store is called 'Relax and Sleep Well Free'. It goes for 27 minutes and left me feeling quite relaxed. My only criticism is that I found the narrators English accent a little bit distracting. Still, it worked and I was surprised at the end that nearly 1/2 hour had passed. I downloaded a few free ones from the App store, haven't tried the others yet.

Unfortunately I don't have a date for results, although am hoping to find out something tomorrow. I've been having a few communication issues with the hospital. It was the ENT section who made the initial diagnosis, but I have to follow up with the cancer clinic for the excision biopsy results. I rang them today and they said I can't make an appointment as I don't have a referral there. Yet the ENT team assure me that they have faxed referrals to the clinic 3 times.... I am going to see my GP tomorrow to see if he can speed things up a bit, he has already been in contact with Pathology there and requested they fax him the results.

Oh Sueblue,
As if it's not pants enough without the hospital messing referrals up. It makes me wonder if they understand the misery of extra day brings. I know my delay has been down to circumstance not problems but it's frustrating all the Sam. Hahaha I'll definitely download the pommy Relax and Sleep Well app and try it out tonight. You. Ever know, it might remind me of Blighty...... Cold wet and dark LOL
I found a pile of free podcasts on iTunes too, perhaps take a peek and see what you think.
I'll be thinking of you tomorrow.. Let me know how you get on.

Hi Suebloo
I just wanted to intro myself and let you know I am around also. I am a bit further along than you but it's all so new to me and every day is unknown territory.
Last night was the best sleep I have had since about 2 days before I got my results last Friday. For me it has taken a few days to sink in and get to a place of acceptance.
I hope you find out some news today also and I hope it is all good. It's hard enough dealing with this journey without bureacratic bungles. I am lucky I have contact with an oncology nurse at the hospital who was part of the multidisciplinary team so she was my connection. Although they get busy and I have been forgotton. But I know I am one of many.
I am waiting for an apointment to find out about my radiotherapy treatment next week and it's dragging I can tell you. It's the waiting and wondering. For me it's how big a deal my treatment is going to be and for how long. A few other questions about the extent of the cancer cells remaining etc.
Anyway I totally agree with you, keeping busy is good and meditation is a big help. I am an advocate for counselling as well. I have a counselling session this morning myself so I must get my A into G and get going.
Wishing you all the best and take good care of your self.

Thanks Eva,
No, still waiting unfortunately :(

There had been a bit of a communication mix up at the hospital, with Haematology saying that I couldn't be given an appointment as I hadn't been referred there, and then ENT saying that the issue was with Haematology as they had sent 3 referrals through...

On Tuesday I did manage to find out that I have been assigned to a doctor at the clinic, and my file (for want of a better word!) was with the doctor waiting for review. Each patient is allocated an appointment on a priority basis. The receptionist I spoke to said I should hear from them by the end of the week (which is today).
So, I'm going to ring them later this morning. If I still don't have an appointment, or if the appointment is a few weeks away, I've decided I'm going to find out how I can get a copy of my pathology results. Then I'll take them to my GP. That's my plan anyway. I'm trying to stay patient, I understand the whole priority thing, and that's not the issue really. I don't mind waiting a month to see a specialist, but I DO mind waiting a month to find out what type of cancer I have, if that makes sense!

How are you going Eva? When do you get your results?

Hi Juno,

Thanks for your kind words. It's reassuring to know I'm not alone in this. From what you are saying, I guess I have to get used to this waiting game.

I'm generally quite a calm, relaxed and patient person! But on Monday it will be 3 weeks since I found out I have cancer, and as there are so many types of Lymphoma I just want to find out what I am dealing with - Then I can get busy researching and preparing questions to ask the doctor.

I'm like you also in wanting to find out how big a deal my treatment will be. I want to know will I still be able to work for example. At the moment I'm on extended sick leave from work until the 28 August. I've found its all well and good to have a certificate, but I've ran out of sick leave, and only have a week's annual leave left, so work is paying me 2 days annual leave a week and then 3 days leave without pay each week. Also, a lot of the work I do is project based, and so they have been put on hold, but I need to let work now when I will be back.

It's funny though, the work and money related problems don't feel as significant to me as my health!

As for keeping busy, yes I am finding that is helping. I try and plan something for each day, yesterday was a haircut! I've also taken up knitting again, haven't had time to do that for years. I've decided to knit squares for 'Wrapped with Love', who send blankets overseas. And I've enrolled in a free 4 week online university course (through Open2study). On the home front I've been de-cluttering and sorting things out.

I am thinking about counselling too, and deep breathing/meditation has definitely been helping when I wake up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep. I think that breathing and relaxation techniques will probably come in handy during treatment too.

I hope you have found out about your appointment Juno, good luck with your treatment next week :)

Hi Sue,
Oh it's so frustrating! You're way more patient than me. I'd be sitting on their doorstep until some one gave me an appointment and my path results. I hope you get some good news today and some progress. I understand the need to prioritise appointments, you're doing really well. Keep us posted, we're rooting for you.

I'm still waiting for my results from the surgery on 5th but I got the bill for my path tests yesterday, great, bill me but don't tell me...... What can you do? LOL
Roll on Monday when hopefully I can move another square on this bizarre board game! It never quite goes the way you expect though lol.
Sending you positive thoughts and peaceful nights

Thanks Eva.
I rang Haematology just then and they were unable to tell me anything as my file is still with the doctor. The receptionist did say that if I was concerned I could ask my GP to ring the doctor.

I also spoke to Pathology, who said that results can't be released to a patient, but they can to a doctor if they give their provider no.

So now I'm off to my GP to ask for his help! I have a massive headache today so needed to see him anyway for a script for pain relief, and I'm going to see if he will give me clearance to go back to work part-time. The way this is going I will have used up all my leave prior to diagnosis, leaving nothing for treatment!

Sending you positive thoughts for Monday :)

Thanks Eva.

I went to see my GP today and he arranged to have the path report faxed to him. It turns out I have to be patient for a while longer... unfortunately because the cells were necrotic (dead), they were only able to confirm that it was B cell lymphoma, there were no viable positive cells to test any further... and the recommendation is a rebiopsy! I can't believe I have to go through this whole process again (waiting, surgery, more waiting).

On a positive note, on the suggestion of one of the Cancer Council staff, I rang the clinical nurse technician at the hospital. I explained my situation and he has promised to follow it up for me on Monday. I don't expect to jump the queue or anything, but don't mind being switched over to another doctor who has less of a wait time, he was going to look into it for me.

I felt more reassured after speaking to him. He said that the wait for an appointment is most likely due to the fact that this lymphoma is localised, and is in the early stages. He said I should be fine to go back to work part-time, as a lot of people work through their treatment.

So I've booked a meeting with my manager next week to discuss returning to work. I want to keep the arrangements flexible so that I can take time off for treatment and appointments as required, but at least work will keep me busy and keep my mind off things a bit. I want to think about something else other than cancer!

The next step (after seeing the specialist) will most likely be a PET scan to see if the lymphoma has spread anywhere. If not, they'll then make a decision on how they are going to treat the localised cancer (radiotherapy, or radiotherapy + chemo). He said unfortunately it won't be over in a few weeks.

So, all in all, even though I haven't progressed any further, I'm glad that I followed up on this today. At least I'm not waiting for results anymore... I know that there are no results to wait for, if that makes sense!

Unfortunately I still have the headache, but hopefully a good night's sleep and some strong pain killers tonight will fix that :)
