Tina, i was told the chemo tablets werent as effective or maybe not proven to be as effective as going through a port or pic line. They said if i was an 80 year old woman then i could do the tablets but as a 29 year old the best thing was to stick with what is known and proven to be the right and best way of doing things. You can have your bloods taken thru these lines as well which saves alot of grief. Have you got someone you can take to the hospital with you tomorrow to help listen, i found this really helpful as its such an information overload that sometimes your support person hears alot more than you do. Hi Sandra Well done on getting this far!! I was sooo excited to be finishing my treatment etc that i didnt think about suddenly not having to do trips to the hospital every 10 days etc so i found once all the nausea and tiredness settled down i didnt know what to do with myself! I ended up going to my GP as i felt a bit lost and confused and he said its completely normal i think he called it a transition period, it probably took a good six months for me to find my feet and realise what my "new life" was going to be like. I think its a wonderful thing this bowel cancer screening kit but please be aware it doesnt always pick up cancer, i did the test and it came back negative only to be diagnosed with stage 3 bowel cancer a month later. so if you have other symptoms my best advice is to go the doctor and get a referral for a colonoscopy ... Ron i would just like to say thank you, i was diagnosed with Colorectal cancer aged 29 in June 2010. I am a mother of two young children with a loving husband. I think every day it scares me that this may come back! I did all the treatment, had the operation, there was three lymph nodes involved out of 18 taken so that is a good result however i cant help but wonder if this ugly thing is going to rear its head again and screw up my life! So thank you for giving me hope yet that i will live a long and happy life. Tina Thats exactly what i was diagnosed with back in June 2010. I got through it all by taking each treatment process as a step, once the diagnosis was done (which when i look back was one of the hardest parts waiting to hear what is going on) i then only dealt with what was coming up next ie the five weeks of treatment. I didnt let my mind wander to the operation or the bag. Im not sure which is the right way to deal with things but i felt by doing that i could stay strong and concentrate on what was happening at the time and i could get a grasp on all the medical jargon etc. Make sure you see the nurses at the radiation place if you get any discomfort (ie skin burn etc) as they are very helpful, where i got treated in WA they were fantastic, dont be afraid to ask for help and rest up! Hi Tina I too completely understand where you are coming from it is very scary! I had a bowel resection done in October 2010 at 30 years of age, i was told i would wake with a colostomy bag they werent sure if it would be a permenant one or a temporary one, i was marked for both before surgery. I wasnt actually nervous about the surgery or the recovery as i wanted that cancerous tumour out of my body, to me that was getting rid of the nasty invasive thing, i had already undergone six continuous weeks of chemo & radiotherapy prior to this op. The colostomy bag did worry me however i am a mum of two young children one was only just over 1 years old at the moment so i should of been used to dealing with poo. It actually wasnt the poo that worried me it was the actual stoma as i tend to see things like this and faint, however the stoma nurse at the hospital was fantastic, she dealt with it for me right up until i had to leave the hospital basically I had to learn to change my bag etc so i could go home, it honestly wasnt as bad as what i thought it would be, you will be fine, its amazing how we deal with things when we have to! Hi there I can completely understand where you are all coming from and i wouldnt wish any of this to my worst enemy however i have been there as a cancer sufferer and during treatment i suffered those horrible out of control moodswings and i didnt even like me! It is awful i dont really know how to describe it but you cannot help the things that come out of your mouth, i felt like i was almost trapped in someone elses body saying disgusting hurtful things to my husband its out of your control. I thank him these days for putting up with me and still makes me feel sick to of treated him like that and i still dont know what came over me, i was smashing plates, throwing things, screaming crying it was not me at all. I dont blame any of you for feeling selfish and wanting to tell the person to get over themselves as thats how i would be if this was the other way around, I am just giving you "the other side" of things to see if it helps to make things a bit easier to understand.
