Hi everyone, this is my first post so I apologise if I've posted in the wrong place.
My 63 year old father-in-law was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer in 2008 with a PSA of 14 and within a month he had his prostate removed at Royal Brisbane Hospital. Because his PSA was elevated he was told by the specialist that he would have a 100% probability that the cancer would have escaped his prostate and entered his blood stream.
For the past 6 years he has had hormone therapy and this kept his PSA levels low. Unfortunately my father-in-law is an alcoholic and would easily drink 3 bottles of Gin a week. Early 2014 he had a bout of ascites where his abdomen filled up with fluid and the hospital drain off approximately 11 litres. He immediately had ultrasounds and an MRI scan and it was discovered that he had lesions on his liver and spinal metastasis. Since that day his PSA levels have been slowly rising and his last PSA result from December 2014 was 209. He has been told by the specialists that he cannot have chemotherapy due to the lesions on his liver and that he can only have bisphosphonate injections to keep his bones strong. His last MRI scan also showed metastasis in his left hip. He has been told that best case scenario he has 2 years, worst case scenario 6 months.
I'd be interested in hearing experiences of other people who have or have had family members in similar situations. We have all accepted that there is nothing curable that they can do for him now and that the end is probably near.
