Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer

Hi everyone.

My lovely mum (59) was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer about 2 months ago now. She put her symptoms down to her IBS and Chrohns but knew something wasn't right.

She didn't really have very bad symptoms, just pain in her back, some discomfort when eating and constantly tired. Mums always struggled with fatigue because of her medications and other health issues. She has a heart problem too.

She has cancer cells in her liver and one of her lungs and lymph nodes too.

She had 1 session of chemo about 3 weeks ago and it absolutely put her on her backside for a week. Stabbing pain all over and suspected sepsis. When she got over it, she said she didn't want any more chemo because of how ill she was from it. Oncology said chemo would probably give her a few extra months but without treatment, 6-9 months. The thing that's getting me is she seems so well otherwise. I took her out last week and she walks around etc. She is very lively and wants to organise the house alot at the moment which I'm helping her with.

They've said there's another drug coming to the NHS which she can try instead of the chemo she was having (gemcitabine and another drug beginning with A i can't remember the name of).

She's lost most of her hair from just that one session of chemo three weeks ago.

Can anyone offer any advice or support please because we are all just so lost and confused with it all.

Thank you.

Re: Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer

Hello @Tizzle85 ,

I'm so sorry to hear the news of your mother's diagnosis. It must have been such a shock to receive that news, especially when her symptoms didn't seem to reflect the severity of it all. The treatment journey is so challenging and unique to each person, it sounds like your mother is having a really tough time with it which is really hard. It's wonderful that she has you as support and great to hear she seems in lively spirits at present.

Decisions about treatment options can be tough to know what to do, there is no single right answer and it's important to talk through options and how she feels about them. Do you have any support or access to counselling or similar mental health support - it can be beneficial to have a space to work through how you're feeling, perhaps reaching out to your GP would provide you with options.  If you're an Australian resident, you can reach out to the Cancer Connect team on 13 11 20 to talk about support options also.

I have attached a resource that may also be of help and hope that others in the community can offer words of understanding for you too.
