We used to line up metal bottle tops on the steel tracks that ran along the railway bridge over the Yarra. Then we'd run down the tracks and off the bridge before a train approached. After a train went past we'd venture out onto the bridge again and collect the flattened bottle tops and use them as Ninja weapons. You flicked them like mini Frisbees. They went a long way very fast.
One afternoon we were too slow getting off the bridge. The two of us jumped out of the way and huddled together, pushing ourselves against an upright support centimetres from the passing train.
We're both still alive. Actually, we are getting close again, 45 years after our railway line exploits. I dropped in to his business to meet him for an arranged lunch. It had only been the week before that I told him over the phone I had cancer. His wife and business partner came out to say hello. She came right up to me and looked me in the eye, smiled and held out her hand.
It was so good. She didn't say anything specific, but I left for lunch knowing that having cancer was not an issue for her at all. She was letting me know there was no barrier there. I think it was really impressive and made a difference to my outlook at the time.
I'll stay away from railway bridges with her husband in future, though.

There is nothing better some nights. Everything including the enamel is destined to be put together and cooked slowly for a long time. And the way she does the risotto is heavenly.
I just thought you all should know.

It depends what was in it. If it was only linen, then no, Juile it doesn't count. Sorry.
On the other hand if it were all the dresses your mum bought you that you never wore because you didn't think they were you and she only did it to impose her style on you anyway, but you were too scared to throw them out, well in that case it would count.
And how many sheds do you have? I don't have any. Can I have one of yours? Sailor and I can sit in it and sing sea shanties.

I liked the phrase when I heard it thirteen years ago, but I won't use it in relation to myself now. It seems to apply to hard rubbish collections more than cancer recovery.
What do you thnk?

Do you mean as in Eric Idle "know what I mean, know what I mean". If so, then:
"always look on the bright side of life".
So there.

Hi Julie
I don't think it's claiming back. It doesn't feel like that to me. I have been on new territory for two years or so, ever since one of the Cancer Council staff found me crying in front of the brochure wall at Rathdowne Street.
So 'returning' to working full time isn't going back anywhere. I do have a new agenda for myself and don't have a sense I need to reclaim anything.
There were pratical considerations about deciding to work full time. I didn't want to lose an opportunity that came up by staying part-time, that's all.
But it does eat into my blogging time, which is extremely inconvenient.
I feel I'm rambling and I don't know if I've answered your question at all.
By all means think about your motivation to return to work. I'm embarrassed to say it took cancer for me to do it...know what I mean?

I'm content with it, Cats. Just tired as well. I did need to do it although it does mean reworking the writing time into the week somehow. That's the space I'm losing. Time will tell.

Fighting about the cigarettes together is probably less painful than facing the cancer alone - as each of them necessarily is at the moment. And running away fits with that too.
Poor people. I feel for them and for you. There will be some help avaialable, though, I'm sure. A bit of talking.

Bored? Here's a tip. Go out and make a mistake and learn from it. I've found that's kept me occupied for 55 years so far. I haven't been bored waiting to grow up. Not yet, anyway.
The "I'm grown up" bus should be along any minute now. I think.
Oh dear, I've spent my fare.
