Hi,Im from Port Lincoln in South Australia. I was diagnosed with cervical cancer in Sept 2007 at 21 years old. I am in remission, but have a lot of things going on due to side effects of the chemo and ray. This is all becoming very costly and I am unable to save for my future as all spare cash goes on medication, counselling, physio, accupuncture etc. I've emailed and contacted so many organisations, but nothing! HELP PLEASE. any information would be appreciated as this is making life very stressful and I cant see myself getting ontop of things financially. Thanks

Hi Krystle, I am sorry to hear that you are struggling to get ahead in life at such a young age. I too have been poor as for the past 7 years (but I chose to study as well, so that did not help!). I remember paying for bills solidly for 12 months after leaving hospital. I was very lucky that my local community had a fund raiser for me and I was able to use these funds. So is it correct that you have had no financial help from any cancer organisations to date? Which ones have you made contact with? Did you know that the Cancer Council has a financial assistance scheme, where people affected by cancer experiencing financial hardship can access a small amount of money. Also, do you currently get government benefits and/or a health care card? Are you studying or working at present? I hope I can help link you up to something soon, Nikki

Sorry to hear the CC could not help you financially Krystle, as i fully thought they had a financial assistance program :( Perhaps Raul, could shed some light on whether or not the CC have this kind of service and if there is one, is it available in every CC state branch and what does one have to do to qualify? PS: have replied to your email. I think because you sent the message using my 'contact form' it got lost in my mail inbox through me not recognising it as a cancer connections linked email. I now know to look out for these messages in my inbox! TA 🙂

Hi Nikki and Krystle, Every CC has a different range of services so while here in NSW we have a range of options for financial help, it might be the case than in SA there are not options for Krystle's specific options. it also depends on the laws in each state. I am sorry to hear you have not been able find a way to get support in SA. Does anyone else have any ideas of available financial support in SA? Best, Raul

Hello, I'm 20 and was diagnosed last year with Hodgkin's Lymphoma, and I know how hard the money situation can be. Thankfully my parents have been fantastic. I live in WA, so I cant be sure the organisations I suggest are available to you, but it's worth a try! I'm from the country, so an organisation Red Kite helped out, with fuel vouchers. They also help out with payment of bills as well. Also I'm on centrelink, which has been great! Not a huge amount of money, but the healthcare card is FANTASTIC! Makes most (unfortunately not all) meds relatively cheap. Have you spoken to centrelink? They have sickness allowances or youth allowance, depending on your circumstances. I'll be sure to keep my eye out to see if there's anything else that could help. :) Oh I forgot! Red Kite also do scholarships, to help out with studies and so forth.... varying amounts
