Hi everyone
My father passed away in 2005 after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer just four weeks previously.
For those of you who have had experience of PC, either as a sufferer, survivor or carer, you will know what a cruel cancer it is. There has been virtually no progress in recent years in either early screening for PC or surgical advancements. Survival rates remain critically low and it is often termed the forgotten cancer. Resources to help fund research and support groups are often directed elsewhere leaving those affected by PC out on a limb.
I have decided that it is time we in Australia did something about this situation. I have found only one group - Avner's Fund - in the whole of the country that is solely dedicated to PC and they do great work. In the UK, there are two major fund-raising/support organisations for PC and the story is the same in the USA. I've put the links to these sites at the bottom of the post so you can see what a support group is capable of.
Even if we can get something going in each state, it would be a big step forward. I'm trying to get something off the ground here in Victoria so I thought I'd start by doing the Melbourne Run - only the 10km one mind you! My family are running as Rob's Mob (named after my dad) so if you would like to sponsor us, however small an amount, that would be great. I've also put the link below.
Many thanks for letting me ramble on (and vent a little too) but I hope you will have a think about what we can do to fight PC. Let me know your thoughts!
Regards
Gail
