Research Study: Beyond Survival, What Treatment Outcomes Matter Most?

What makes cancer treatment worthwhile? For some people, it may be living longer. For others, it may be managing side effects, maintaining independence, protecting quality of life, or continuing the activities that matter most. Researchers want to better understand which treatment outcomes are most important to people affected by cancer.

Researchers from UNSW Sydney and the University of Adelaide are seeking input from people affected by cancer to help identify the outcomes that matter most when assessing the benefits of cancer medicines.

The study aims to ensure that patients' everyday experiences are considered alongside traditional clinical outcomes when evaluating cancer treatments. Findings will help researchers better understand what people value during and after treatment and support more patient-centred decision-making in cancer care.

You may be eligible to take part if you:

  • Are aged 18 years or older
  • Live in Australia
  • Have been affected by cancer and have direct or indirect experience with cancer medicines, including as a patient, survivor, carer or family member
  • Can read and write in English

The online survey takes around 20 minutes to complete and involves rating and ranking different treatment outcomes.

The survey closes on 26 October 2026.
