was Dx in 2002, at age 28 years, with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and somehow managed to come out the other end (quite damaged) to slowly and progressively to get on with life again. Therefore I regard myself as one hell of a LUCKY GIRL. Since my cancer Dx I have managed to finish a university degree in Health Promotion (Honours) in order to get myself involved with Young Adult and Cancer (YAC) issues and support service development (as I noticed there has never really been much help for us YACs over the age of 25 years!). The Cancer Council NSW have been instrumental in supporting my myriad of ideas for new support services for YACs (thank god someone finally listened to all my whinging) and their advocacy training program has equipped me with skills, strength and connection with other like minded individuals who want to instrument change for the better. I hope to meet MANY more YACs through this online support service, so jot down a line and say hi :)

Hi Sailor, Yes this forum topic would be a GREAT place to have QLD and SA list there advocacy training also. It would be nice to meet and great the other people who help organise the training across the various states and we could have a chat about stuff right here!! Is it possible for you to find out how many YACs attend your VIC trainings in the age range 18-40 years so we would be able to contact these YAC Advocates in the future to possibly link them up to our Online Network that should be operational in the second half of this year? Hi, I think that having a site like this set up to provide both information and support will engage more people as in my opinion some users will just want to have a chat with someone else, yet others will want some specific information or know when certain events are on etc. Additionally, I think that having a series of people who can update knew information when it comes in is vital to keeping the site user up to date with the latest within our cancer community. It would be a shame to see a wonderful site like this to be used just as a discussion forum, as so many already exist online. I say... lets do something different, effected, engaging and more helpful. Would love to hear what others think? Nikki

Hey thanks Sailor for adding this info in here for the Victorians. Great to see this training happening in other places. Has Victoria run one of these trainings specific for young people aged 18-40 years? if not do they plan to in the future? as it would be great to meet other young adult trained advocates and perhaps have us all linked up through a virtual network, like we will be doing here in NSW. Just over 2 years ago I attended a 2 day training program to become an advocate for cancer related issues. This training, run by the Cancer Council was epic - and free (including accommodation, flights and meals). Why am I sharing this with you here in the Young Adult section of this site? Because the Cancer Council have just announced that they are running a similar training SPECIFIC for YACs aged 18-40 years. This is an AWESOME opportunity for you to join a new movement of YACs who are presently not happy with being 'stuck in the middle' and want to do something about it. If this interests you, then apply now for this training, as there are only 20 places up for grabs! The fight against cancer takes many forms. It requires more than just scientific and medical advancement; at times we need to convince governments and other decision makers to act decisively to defeat cancer. Advocacy is all about translating small actions by individuals into big wins for communities. The Cancer Council NSW offer FREE advocacy training to help individuals achieve these small wins.
