thanks Joe...i have been using salt and water to rinse...my mouth is no longer upset with sores but my tongue is getting white but i brush it and some of it comes off...the salt water doesnt hurt....i use an ultrasonic toothbrush and i floss...i couldnt brush for a couple months i was so bad....not so bad now...i have trays to take fluoride treatments at night for 30 minutes but i cant use them yet since they dry my mouth out severely over night and after treatment cant eat or drink all night?   thanks for the good words and i will try to continue to get thru this mess...sorry to hear your going thru this again...wishing you the best   thanks bill ... Hi Captain long time since my last posting.... i am the 70 yr old in great (or was) health with left tonsil cancer and 4 lymphs in neck coming up on 3 months post treatments of 35 rad and 7 chemo cisplatin terrible time on the rebound had thrush really bad for over 90days with medication mucus  is still terrible if not worse than in treatment...my mouth is a mess with dry as the desert then changes to foaming then goes to sticky thick then strings of horrible mucos....its the worst.... the Dr. just says it will go away can not eat...anything that goes in my mouth makes me want to throw up due to taste and texture i am holding my weight due to feeding tube and haven't eaten food in 3-4months...thank God you really insisted i consider a feeding tube...without it i wouldnt be typing this my energy is 100% but my life is worthless at this point not being able to eat is devastating since i am so sick of it...i have hunger but when i put something in my mouth its disgusting due to the saliva slime, foam, dry whatever is going on in there at the time.....i will rinse my mouth and then try but no go...tried soda, drinks with food and cant get t a bite down   have you heard of this and do you think it will go away...you seem to have been on this forum for some time and wonder if i have a unique problem here that may not go away....   Sunday i go for the PET scan to see where my body is at...   Happy Holidays and Merry Xmas Bill  ... thank you Capt. and thank you to everyone for answering my questions regarding my mucocitis and thrush....i started my Fluzonazole today with 200 mg today and 100mg for next 4 days...i hope it can help because i havent been able to talk for weeks on end and i do believe the doctors know how to use the radiation but are oblivious to how to treat side affects...this should have been tended to weeks ago...my mouthe looks like tomato cut in half...the pain is off the map and i have very little to take for that pain....but my question is this....if my mouth is raw meat with the pain level about as high as a person could take without being admitted to the hospital....should i get my last 2 treatments in the morning and on tuesday ?   i have had to date 33 treatments of 2gy per treatment to a 2.3cm cancer in tonsil for a total of 66gy and 5 cisplatin chemo treatments to date...would it be wise to NOT get the last 2 radiation treatments and have to go to the hospital to treat the pain it will inflict as far as i can it may do etc....i just dont know how i could take 2 more blasts of tonsil and lymphs .....the 4 lymphs were at like 1.6gy...the 4 lymphs were less than 2 cm's   i feel if the dr looks at me monday afternoon he will say your doing great (as he always says) and lets get in there and get our radiation !!!....meanwhile i have sit home and suffer or go to the hospital....yes i take oxicodone 5mg liquid in my tube every 4 hours as needed but it just takes the edge off...not the pain...the pain comes thru loud and clear...i am getting nourishment and fluids thru the tube so i am good there but the pain is off the map....   if it were you....would you skip the last 2 treatments or at least post pone them if thats an option???   my mouth is an open wound... ???  i can not imagine what 2 more treatments on top of this would do ??  has anyone experienced this at the end.....??   thanks to all Bill ... thanks Shane i saw the nurse yesterday and she looked in my mouth and gave me a scrip for that but when i looked up the side affects i almost past out...have yet to take it....your sure its safe ???  it can cause everything including death ??     i have it in front of me on my desk and may start it...its 100mg....take 2 to start and 1 a day for 4 more days   hope i live to tell about it....   thanks Bill ... Hi Captain thought i would inquire as to whats going on with my mouth...since you seem to have a vast understanding of the tonsil/lymph chemo radiation procedure and had some difficulty.   i have the left tonsil and 4 lymphs in neck to refresh your memory of who i am....this Tuesday i finished chemo and i have 3 more radiations left counting today...i will be done next tuesday.   i have kept my weight up thru it all with the feeding tube thanks to you....and thought i was going to be out of the woods since my mouth pain is very significant but the Dr. is telling me its all normal etc....   in this past week i have been getting more and more irritation of the mouth and throat and a white film has developed as of this mornings inspection across the roof of my mouth....like someone went in and spray painted it...not just thick saliva but a mold looking white bumpy solid covering....i had a bit on the  back gums for weeks but not much and its not painful including the roof of my mouth...no pain...   now where he has shot the tongue on the left side is all swelled up and looks a mess and truly hurts and has hurt for a month....   now this morning my tongue has oblong circles of red on it and the tongue is also white but not like someone painted it like the roof of my mouth ???   yesterday the Dr. prescribed oxycodone 5mg to take every 4 hrs for pain....all this did not break out yesterday on tongue etc but he only looked in my mouth for about 5 seconds and said it looked beautiful???  the tongue broke out this morning and i guess the roof of the mouth got much worse overnight also.   reading about mucocitis on the internet it states if infections set in you can die from this ....???     you had told me you had a bad go with mucocitis as well as thrush and thought i may get your opinion on this and if i am worrying too much and just take the oxy and continue to feed and hydrate thru the tube and get on with it....the pain is multiplying and the slime in mouth has kept my tongue white all the time like its encapsulated in the white thick gel i now have for saliva and its been that way for many weeks .....   i dont know how serious this is or if its just the way it goes at the end... ???   i rinse and brush a few times a day....the baking soda and salt feels like i put razor blades in my mouth so i use warm tap water ?   sorry for such a long inquiry....but i am worried that the Dr. may know how to radiate but may not be so good at keeping me out of trouble with my mouth sores etc???   hope your doing fine in your recovery since you said your much better but got some way to go....   thanks Captain.... thanks Joe....i may try the ginger thru the feeding tube...i used to take a lot of vitamins until treatment and they stopped me but i have ginger capsules and i will crack one open and pour in a drink and shoot it....see if that helps with the nausea....thanks ... View more
