I finish my final round of chemo tomorrow, the main side-effect that I’m now left with is Neuropathy which affects my hands and both my feet causing numbness in the hands and numbness pins and needles in both feet however my right foot is worse and I also get pain in the right leg. I am after any advice or tips that people can give me that a living with the neuropathy ideas about gloves types of socks or shoes, have you found heat pads or things like creams help . The specialist has also prescribe Pregabalin (Lyrica) as they said this may help with pain.

Hi Sch Sorry about your loss of feeling 12 months down the track. I have permanent numbness in hands and feet, but can still feel. I wear globes most of the time and wear thick socks which helps a bit. Around my 9th treatment I spoke to my oncologist about the permanent numbness and he reduced the dosage slightly, but now I think its back to normal, so will have to follow that up. How did you go with chemo taste and any of the other side effects?

I’m slowly getting to the end of treatment with two cycles left, one next week and then last one two weeks latter. I didn’t know what side effects I would get so it was learning experience. It was my 3rd cycle when the cold sensitivity started in my hands and feet. I was also unable to have any cold drinks and understand now all the people who commented it was like swallowing SHades of Glass. Chemo taste now means a lot of foods taste bland. Strange but the cold sensitive issue is now worse in my feet and hands basically numb all the time, but I can now have cold drinks. Constipation is now a major issue initially early on in treatment just having extra prune juice was the fix, but it just got worse and needed more over the counter medication. I'm on a high fiber diet drink plenty of water but the constipation is now worse and painfull when I poo it stings. I googled this and found other people with same issue describing going to the loo as passing shades of glass! For me having the operation was a walk in the park compared to the 12 recommended cycles of Chemo .

About 6 cycles left, mine was 12 cycles, starting to get that metallic taste more often that people talk about. It means a lot of the food has a strang taste. Your lucky you have only one more cycle. Good luck

I hope this link may help someone who is about to start chemo with Oxaliplatin. It is a small study that shows that keeping ice chips in the mouth during oxaliplatin chemotherapy may prevent cold sensitivity, a common oral side effect. I'm 6 cycles into my treatment, so it's a bit late for me. Hi. PaulineG Finally had my port inserted on Monday, so the port is still a bit sore, but nothing a couple of panadol won't fix. They removed the pic line today, I was surprised no pain all over in about 20 seconds! Next Wendsday is when my port will be used.... It is 2 weekly cycle. They have told me it will be sore 3-4 weeks. I will make sure I ask for the ”ointment” you mentioned to numb the needle! Take Care and I hope your treatment goes well Regards Albundy21

Hi. Rick Thanks for getting back to me. I think I will tell the specialist if he can't find a good vain in chest, I will stick with the pic line and leave the neck. The pic line. Is. painless I can't feel it (the line in my arm) or when they take blood or administer the drugs. Regards Albundy21

I have a pic line in my left arm, because specialist who for ports under skin was away. I have had 3 treatments every 2 weeks and 9 to go. Everyone has suggested ports are better. I saw the specialist who will do operation today, he said port would normal go. On the side my plc line is in so will have to go on other side and if can't find good vain in chest into my neck. He said cancer team wouldn't want pic line removed until sure port is working. Anyone had experience of a port in the neck? My chemo. Is not due for another week after op. Anysuggestions

Yes , I’m due for my 4 th round next week , 12 rounds all up. The cold sensitivity was worse the 2 and 3rd round, wake up with cold hands and tingles, grab something cold from the fridge oouch! Even bottle of water left out near bed to cold . Cool water is just drinkable, but I’m sure after next Chemo round it will be warm water only. I also noticed the metallic taste in my mouth ...for me peppermint chewing gum seems to take the taste away. Also they suggest having more small meals during the day helps with Nausia . I have original Smith crips to munch on as a snack, this helps me when I’m feeling a little bit sick and save medication for when I’m really sick.
