This is one of my favourites Sailor =
"The world is not respectable; it is mortal, tormented, confused, deluded forever; but it is shot through with beauty, with love, with glints of courage and laughter; and in these, the spirit blooms..."

Love the quote!
Thank you for introducing me to George Santayana. I had not heard of him, although I find I have heard some of his quotes, particularly "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it". I got off the shelf my trusty copy of the Oxford book of Quotations and looked him up and found this quote and a few more. So then, knowing that the internet is a truly wonderful thing, googled him. (Isn't it amazing - we do not talk of yahooing or dog-pileing, but everybody knows the active verb "to google" - should that be a capital, "to Google"?) What an interesting person. Poet, philosopher, literary critic, author and academic. I shall have to do some more research.
Cheers
Sailor
It is only when we are very happy, that we can bear to gaze merrily upon the vast and limitless expanse of water, rolling on and on with such persistent, irritating monotony, to the accompaniment of our thoughts, whether grave or gay. When they are gay, the waves echo their gaiety; but when they are sad, then every breaker, as it rolls, seems to bring additional sadness, and to speak to us of hopelessness and of the pettiness of all our joys. Baroness Orczy, The Scarlet Pimpernel
Yes Sailor, Santayana is great. I also had a little quote I liked during my treatment: Life's tough, get a helmet! - Unfortunateky I can't remember where I got that from and although it's not originally mine, I've adopted it and my Dad thought it was such a good attitude to have that he "Googled" the word helmet and found a couple of little Bob the Builder toys on Ebay with helmets and he sent one to me with "Life's tough, get a helmet" written on its t-shirt!
I agree with you about the word google - it's become a verb everyone uses daily. When I lived in England, people would say things like "I need to Hoover the carpet" - instead of vacuum - same goes with google!
Hi guys,
Artist in recovery - I think that quote says it all! Having just returned from a family holiday in NZ (even my 20 year old came)there were times when my spirit certainly bloomed.
Of course with 4 people living in close quarters there were also times when torment was perhaps more apt!
