Friend has Bowel cancer - chemo or not?

Hi, My 61 year old friend recently underwent emergency surgery for bowel cancer. The results are good. She has a Stoma and tests indicate that the cancer was removed. She has been offered chemo to 'mop up' any rogue cells. It will be 6 month of treatment then she can look at a stoma reversal. She is unsure whether to have the treatment or rely regular checks. I don't know much about bowel cancer. I had tongue cancer - it was surgically removed, no treatment. Despite PET Scan and regular monthly checks, I found a lump in my neck 6 months later and had to have a radical neck dissection then radiotherapy. So, given my experience, I want to tell her to have the treatment - but I know I know her cancer is different and she has to make the decision for herself. At the moment all I have said is that she could get a second opinion and that what ever she decides she has to feel comfortable with it. I can't decide for her. Any advice or personal accounts would be welcome. Thanks CJF

I too have just undergone bowel cancer surgery and the cancer was removed. I was told to have 'mop up' surgery too by surgeon but when I saw oncologist he said it wasnt needed, just a 6 monthly check up. I also have Myeloma and wondered if this was the reason. I think a lot of it depends on your age. Good luck.

Re: Friend has Bowel cancer - chemo or not?

Hey CFJ I would say for your friend to throw anything and everything at this. If the onc's recommend mop up chemo do it. I was suggested that I have mop-up chemo after my bowel surgery (ultra-low colorectal cancer). Even though I did not finish the treatments 10/14 use everything that is at the disposal and suggested by the specialists. At the time it was inconvenient and down right awful - I'm happy to say the other side is a bright future. Good Luck :0 Darren PTDT

Hello CJF, as per my thought your friend should try out every possibility and try to consult with experts to get some valuable advice.
