Hi I am a mum of a 23 year old son with sarcoma , this is the toughest and most frightening Existence as a parent I want to take it all away 😞 we have just been told my son can’t have the treatment he needs due to platelets being too low , this could be a combination of treatments of time and bone disease , we are shattered but still have hope that he can recover better at home after being in hospital for almost 4 weeks , I just feel helpless any other parents out there to talk to ?
Hi Deb25,
I'm sorry to hear about this temporary halt in treatment, what recommendations have the doctors suggested to help assist with raising his currently low platelets?
I've heard that some treatments are actually currently being conducted in the home environment now, where before it would have taken place within a hospital instead. Part of the reasoning behind this is people thrive better in their own comfortable environments than they do in foreign sterile ones.
Hi iloveyoudearly7, because my sons cancer is rare they tell us that we can only do treatments in a specialist cancer centre , we live almost 2hrs from hospital so that makes it harder this is 2hrs in good traffic ! he can be managed at home better I agree so the aim is getting him home hopefully soon , we will then hope his platelets recover enough to start the form of treatment offered 🤞 The treatment offered was not funded so he had to be an out patient but bloods failed him , This is like a security blanket of possible treatment has been ripped from under him ! It’s a waiting game. Thankyou for response talking helps
The current situation sounds quite limiting at the moment, maybe we could look at something more regulatable for now? What about future dietary support, for when your son comes home to recuperate and spend time with his family. We could look at possible natural foods and vitamins to help boost his platelet count?
The following vitamins assist with boosting platelet count:
- Folate rich foods
- Vitamins such as B12, C, D and K
- Iron rich foods
Vitamin K - Kale, parsley, basil, watercress, broccoli, celery, asparagus, okra, cabbage and etc.
Carrots - Assists in maintaining a normal blood count
Raisins are packed with iron and helped strengthen the body while normalising the blood count as well.
Lean meats such as fish, chicken, and turkey are rich in protein, zinc and vitamin B12, all of which help increase the blood platelet count.
Beans contain vitamin B9 and folate which boosts the blood count as well.
Things to avoid:
- Alcohol and some artificial sweeteners

(Maybe you could seek advice or planned treatment from an dietician?)
