After finding out that hubbys new brain tumours were inoperable we decided to get the kids away for a week. School work is already suffering for our 15 year old but school has been very supportive. Hi Di Yeah well 3 weeks ago it all changed again with his first post radiation MRI where they found a new tumour. Unfortunately this sucker is inoperable. We took our kids for a holiday, he returned to work on Monday (not what I wanted) and has another scan tomorrow to see how much it has grown in this time with no chemo (3wks). Palliative care meeting next week and new chemo to start. It must be difficult for your brother witout home support, just the thought of getting around is difficult when you are not allowed to drive. Being at distance from loved ones is hard, especially when there is illness involved, my mum is in SA struggling with bowel cancer and chemo. Our situation was very different. We had to do all treatments with the girls around, this meant hearing us talk about the situation, we had to bring them in on what was happening. Throughout all his treatments we have been open with our girls 9, 13 and 15. Without giving them any time frames, we have learnt to value all our time together. There is still typical teenage tantrums. We did get Canteen involved early on for the older two. Can't recommend them enough. Last Sunday we had to explain that with all his treatments, surgeries and radiation the tumour is back and now inoperable (it was devasting for us all). I know grief can take many forms and be there forever. I think it is wonderful that you can express all that you feel, I watch my father still dealing with the lose of our step mother and wish he could be half as open. Pete is still very much 'together' and it makes speeaking about death and what is to happen later hard to imagine/do. I need the security of no regrets. Hi Geoff The night before his last surgery we did Enduring guardianship and power of attorney terrible things to even think about, but the peace of mind once done were worth it. We have the weekend to ourselves 2 older girls at canteen camp (good timing) and younger having sleepovers. Thank you all for your comments. We are trying to take it easy on ourselves this weekend, still waiting for our 15 year old to be home fom overseas to share the news. We need to find out what options/benefits we have left for chemo. But for now Pete has decided to take a break from any chemo for the next few weeks planning a short trip away with our girls. I've been a stay at home mum on and off for the last 15 years. When Pete was diagnosed we were moving interstate and I haven't worked since then. He was fortunate that his employer rescinded his resignation and took him back. This brought great peace of mind to our financial security. I couldn't now take a job that I would only have half my mind on, work can wait. No one should feel guilty for whatever way they deal with this, you have to do what is right for you and your circumstances.
