A big shout out to all those in the cancer community living in the Blue Mountains, NSW. I recognise that there is a huge need for a supportive and caring space for all cancer survivors, of any stage, to meet and just chat about anything. No rigid agenda and no structured time frame, just a cuppa with other folk travelling with a lived experience of the whole cancer “journey”. Come along and share the time with others who just understand without complicated explanations. The cafe is open at The Cancer Wellness Centre in Leura May 23rd at 10.30 am. No cost. Please join us. Ultreya…onwards with courage 🙏

Congratulations Captain…you are a champion, and a great model for all of us surviving and living with cancer. I completed my 800 km pilgrimage, The Camino de Santiago, in November and agree …we are all superheroes and capable of anything we can imagine. Enjoy your life and freedom from the restraints of cancer. Blessings 🙏💖

Hola Joey23 and thankyou for your reply. I haven’t posted for a while so great to reconnect with community. Last year I successfully walked the 800 km pilgrimage, Camino de Santiago…returning home in November. I was tested to my absolute limit, underestimating the impact of my chemo induced peripheral neuropathy and post chemo fatigue but it was a fantastic experience. My third Camino de Santiago with different challenges but unexpected gifts of grace and courage. I believe all of us who face the many difficult and complicated issues of cancer treatment are warriors and capable of extraordinary things…we are brave and unbreakable beings ! Every day I posted my walking experience on the “do it for cancer” site to fundraise and this record reminds me of the truly incredible experience, feeling my strength and courage again after the horrid two years of cancer treatment which left me shattered…in pieces. I didn’t listen or read motivational stuff as I always kept walking The Camino again as my motivation to survive cancer treatment, the beacon. Some sort of contract with The Goddess about survival as there were so many days when I really didn’t think I could continue breathing, it was Hell. I am still testing NED which is great and the biggest surprise of all as I really believed that once my “contract” was fulfilled my time here was over. So, I am in the process of discovering what survivorship means for me now…what next ? I am motivated by the countless stories of courage, struggle and bravery that I read on this site and other cancer sites. We are all truly amazing folk. Ultreya….onwards with courage 🙏💖

My thoughts and prayers are with you Thekakoii, I found the early days of diagnosis absolutely overwhelming with a roller coaster of emotions surfacing from shock, disbelief and terror. Reach out for help…use this forum, call Cancer Council as they have the most wonderful, empathic counsellors who will guide you through. It’s a tough time…go gently, one step at a time. 🙏

Good morning Cancer community, as some of you know I am 14 weeks away from walking the Camino De Santiago in Spain, a healing pilgrimage following treatment for stage 4 colorectal cancer. I am dedicating this pilgrimage, not only to celebrate my own healing journey but to raise funds for Cancer Council in support of others on this path. And, with the support of Cancer Council have set up a “do it for Cancer” page to let folk know what I am up to. It seems that my commitment to this pilgrimage and the full on preparation it takes to walk 800 kms is going to be tested to the limits…On Monday I underwent a laparoscopic cholecystectomy, not related to cancer. Seriously !! Just when I was full of energy, strong & confident and able to walk 28 kms at a time now I am back walking only short distances and not able to carry my backpack for at least two weeks. Suddenly dealing with post anaesthetic fatigue, surgical pain and laparoscopic wounds, again. Yes, it would be so easy just to give up and say this is all too hard but I guess, at times, our courage and resilience must be tested otherwise we never feel our power. Today, in the mountains, it is raining and every cell of my body wants to remain snuggled up in a warm bed but I will don my red Camino Altus raincoat and stagger the allocated 5 kms….warriors we are 🙏👣💖

Hola sch, it’s great to keep in touch…thankyou 😏 I see that CaptainAustralia is planning another “big walk”, around Oz. And, judging by the YouTube stories of his last walk for cancer he will do this grand walk with humour, wit and great resilience…gotta love it ! I would just love to catch up with him somewhere on his pilgrimage…is there any chance that you can leave your little ones for a quick g’day with the Captain 🤔 His courage, strength and great hope for us Cancer folk is inspirational & contagious. Surely if the Captain can walk around Oz, I can walk the Camino with grace and strength 🤞 Ultreya …. onwards with courage 🙏👣💖

Hola CaptainAustralia, you truly are an inspiration….thankyou !!! I have been watching your big walk on YouTube and it is a fabulous journey to be a part of. You are a charismatic character, courageous and resilient which gives me hope for my fundraising effort on my Camino De Santiago. I certainly do not have your charm and wit, nor your ability to sleep rough every night so am seeking some extra advice from Cancer Council. It seems that having a big, visible QR code is a great idea so am following that up. I guess walking the pilgrimage in Spain is my way of healing from the cancer trauma and I no longer want to be defined by this disease so am planning to move past it just like you, and hopefully raise some money to support those who held me up/kept me breathing during the really rough treatment times. I see that you are setting off on your big lap of Oz on July 16 and I leave for Spain on September 10. I am hoping we can catch up somewhere on your walk either before I leave or when I return home in November. I will follow you on www.capsbiglap.au and enjoy sharing your next great adventure. All the very best with your training…stay well, strong and happy. You are a legend !! Reminds me of a quote I read… Fate whispers to the Warrior “You cannot withstand the storm” And the Warrior whispers back “I am the storm”. Ultrya…onwards with courage 🙏💖👣

Hola CaptainAustrali and thankyou for your wonderful response which seriously brought tears to my eyes and has made me think clearly about how and why my pilgrimage is so important to me. Your intangible, philosophical comments are exactly what I needed to hear, and to feel, and are more valuable than any practical advice so thankyou ! Yes, I will walk with excitement, gratitude and the expectation that amazing miracles will happen….and just trust that any assistance with fundraising will happen if it is meant to be. Raising $165,000 for paediatric cancer research is truly awesome, especially whilst dealing with, and clearly managing, your own post cancer issues. You are the very definition of a warrior !!! And, it sounds most appropriate that you dress as a superhero for your upcoming 15,000 km trek. I will definitely check out your Brisbane to Melbourne walk and would really like to hear how your circumnavigation of Australia is going if possible ? Are you happy to share please ? I feel as though I should apologise for chasing you down on this forum but really am not sorry as I needed to hear your story & advice… I will be honest, transparent and gracious…with a dash of flamboyance ! Ultreya….onwards 🙏👣💖

Hola sch, thankyou for your kind words and encouragement . I absolutely need all the help I can get if I want to reach my fund raising goal as I have never undertaken any fund raising before. How do I contact @ CaptainAustrali please for tips on preparation & publicity ? This is my third pilgrimage in Spain so I am absolutely confident that it is doable and will be a healing, spiritual experience and I am booked and ready to go, but why not also dedicate the pilgrimage to cancer fundraising ???? Seems like a great way to give back ! Any suggestions greatly appreciated . Ultreya 🙏💖
