Found out today that a friend who had survived 5 years of caeliac disease and then breast cancer (radiation treatment adn hormones) has been diagnosed with 4 tumours in her brain. She is having surgery on Thursday. Not sure if it is a new primary or mets from the breast. I know we hear about it all the time but it still sucks. Samex

It not only sucks, but it knocks you about a lot as well. Makes you look over your shoulder a lot. Sailor The wonder is always new that any sane man can be a sailor. Ralph Waldo Emerson

Thanks so much guys. Sailor, I think that is part of the problem. When you think that you are coping/managing then somehting like this pulls the rug out again. The shadow creeps out again for a while until we push it back in. Thanks again guys, i told my family but while they were sympathetic, they aren't able to see the personal implications nor have the understanding we all may have. The hugs help. S

Hi all, I feel for you samex. I know how you feel. When I was diagnosed I met, in the waiting room another patient who had also been diagnosed and was seeing the same Oncologist, she had just turned 25, she was just a baby. Over the next 3 and a half years we went through hell and back together, firstly surgery on the same day and then 10 days recovery in the same room, then chemo and radiation together. Her cancer recurred 3 times before it finally took her on October 6, 2009. When she passed I cried everyday for weeks. I have to admit I still cry most days even now 4 months later. She was young and beautiful, extremely intelligent and loved by so many. Im not sure I will ever get over the loss, we understood each other more than those friendships I have had for 20 years or more. I used to question why it was her and not me, what made me so special that I could survive. One of the last things she said to me was that I had to promise not to be angry, some days I find that really hard. I hope your friend has some good news soon.

Vanessa your words rang true not so much for this freiend but for 3 others I have lost in the past 5 years. One in particular was best man at our wedding and while he was diagnosed well before me, we were having treatment together at one stage and used to chat for hours (he lived 12 hours away). He was the one who pinned it down for me when he told me that no-one else really understanda what it's like. He called me his chemo buddy. Like you with your friend I miss him every day and I felt so guilty that I survived and he didn't. It took a lot of getting over - not sure that I am. This current friend is not as close but still I have trouble grasping the "why" of it all. Thanks again evryone for the kind words. It helps coming from those of you who understand. S

Sorry to hear your friend has to face all of this again (albeit in a different form). Its hard to be reminded of the frailty of the human body. The human spirit can do wonderful things and I wish for your friend the strength in spirit to fight this next battle. My thoughts are with both of you. Sangeeta

Just a quick update. My friend is doing OK. One tumour was operable and the others are being treated with radiation. Apparently she is very positive and much more aware since the surgery.I haven't visited so as not to overdo the visiting thing. Thnks again for all of your best wishes. S
