Hey CC community, first time posting here, so thanks in advance for taking the time to read.
I’ve just learned that my dad’s treatment for his liver cancer is no longer working. The first doctor told him he had about 12 months left, really bluntly and rudely, and it was heartbreaking to hear him share that experience. He was alone at the time and doesn’t fully understand why things have changed so suddenly.
I went with him to his oncology appointment afterward and made a complaint about the first doctor. The oncology team was so much more patient and compassionate with both Dad and me. They confirmed that, medically, the first doctor’s prognosis was accurate, but it hadn’t been shared in the kindest way. Dad is now on a different medication, and the focus is on keeping him comfortable while slowing things down as much as possible.
It’s tough because Dad has a history of binge drinking, so I’m trying to process this new reality while also coming to terms with some of his behaviors. Our family isn’t great at having serious conversations sober, so it’s been challenging.
I’m just trying to find my footing in this new “normal,” making the most of the time I have with Dad while also balancing my own life and career, especially since I live four hours away from him.
Hi @gretahay
Thanks so much for posting and sharing the sad news of your dad's treatment and prognosis. It's extremely difficult to face news like this, and to reconcile his experiences and sudden changes in his treatment outcomes. I'm sure others here in the community will be able to offer support as you find your feet with this all.
Please also know that the team of health professionals in the 13 11 20 team are only a phone call away. They are available to talk to you about support and questions you may have. Here is a resource that may also be of help to you.
