I also forgot to mention that I was told by the first surgeon I saw that it was mastectomy without reconstruction due to cancer cells being left behind. I did not have an invasive cancer diagnosis yet he was still insisting that mastectomy without reconstruction was my only option.
You can imagine how surprised I was when I learnt about the progress in treatment options and that I was a candidate for skin sparing and nipple sparing surgery. I also leant that the first surgeon I met did not work with a plastic surgeon and didn't practise the latest in breast surgery because that's what he had been doing for the last 30 years.
I was so angry. Find a surgeon that is keeping up with the new and advanced techniques and don't be afraid to ask a surgeon if they actually do skin sparing mastectomy. Ask them how many they have done. Don't be afraid to question there approach. You want as much information as possible and it is so important to feel comfortable with your surgeon.
