Hi Deb,I think Terry will get used to the mask. The radiation became a routine for me and a reason to go out each day . How is he ? Is the radiation IMRT ? I would think it is. They have one machine for that last year at the PA hospital.
If you come across a nurse called Alex,say hello from me . I don't care if she can't remember me but I remember her . She was especially nice to me .Also there was a male nurse who told me ,when no doctor did, about medication for nerve pain . I will be forever grateful to him as well.(By the way my name is Sylvia.)

I had radiation to my nose and eye area in June and July 2010. A few weeks ago tiny bits of skin startred to peel off my nose . It's not a big thing but enough to add to the unattractive things cancer has done to my face. This side effect was unexpected . And over a year later!I aked my opthamologist about the operation to remove excess skin from the upper eye lids to improve my sight . He said it was not possible with the eye affected by the cancer surgery. I could get the other done but I know that my two eyes would look even more different to each other.I will get lots of other opinions.
My field test revealed that I had lost some peripheral vision but not enough to worry about. The sight in that eye was also a tiny bit better and the "good" eye was a bit worse than last time.
I have mixed feelings about this doctor . He operated on my eye to unblock a tear duct and it was only partly successful . This operation rarely fails . He was puzzled. Less than 5 months later I had more symptoms . Another 5 months later I was diagnosed. It turned out that the tear duct blockage still left was cancer and that operation created an opening for it to spread into the nose .
I only continue to see him because he's handy .I don't have great confidence in him but I don't know if I need a better doctor to check my eyes. If I ever needed any kind of operation I would go to another doctor.

I had asked for counselling before I was to begin radiation.It was available at the hospital but my husband and I went to Fiji for a week between Planning Day and radiation. I was given an appointment which arrived by mail and on the answering machine while we were away. The appointment was on one of the days we were away. Irang when we got home and found out and was told they'd make another one.Weeks later my husband approached someone in the hospital as I was still waiting .I got to see one near the end of my time and she said I caould continue to see her but to try and find someone near home.
I saw my gp who couldn't recommend anyone .She suggested I look myself. It was then I decided to ring the Cancer Council fof advice. That call went for over an hour and the person with whom I spoke was wonderful. She booked me an appointment to see one of their counsellors. They provide 5 sessions free of charge in person or on the phone. At any future time if I feel I need more I can have 5 more . This is nothing to do with the 5 sessions covered by Medicare.
My advice is start with a call to the Cancer Council. It was the best thing for me.

It is sad that this happened just when life for you was great and you were about to start a terrific new phase. At least you have your fiance for support. I guess you'll be her support at times too. It's sad that it was not caught early also but it sounds like you are about to get the best treatment. I know the waiting is stressful but remember it's the best that can be done. Try to enjoy the party . I can't think of anything to make you feel better , sorry .

I found when I rang one day last year that it was the first and still the only time I was able to talk about every aspect of having cancer, to one person ,in one converation. I t was one of the best things I've ever done regarding cancer.

Thanks,you expressed this so clearly what I've read in some scholarly articles.If I understand it correctly different cancers can alter something in particular genes so that they can't do their job properly and they don't fight the cancer. Genetic research is so important because it may lead to treatments tailored to each type and stage of cancer. In the future,albeit a distant future, getting cancer may not be any worse than getting a bacterial infection.
