I'm at the Clinical Oncological Society of Australia (COSA) conference, and just attended a session on nutrition, and the importance of clinical support and counselling to minimise risk of malnutrition during treatment. Has anyone received dietary counselling?

My heart goes out to you. I don't know of anything worse than feeling so helpless that you can't change what is happening. Take comfort where ever you can right now, even if it is with people you don't know that well. You sound like a strong woman who loves her family very much. May you and your mum be each other's strength as you make this time as special and comfortable as possible for your step dad.

I'm a partner of a carer, and in my experience the best thing you can do is ask your friend how YOU can help her. I found with my wife that at first she didn't know how I could help her, she had so much on her mind, she didn't give herself a chance to think about how other people could help her. But it IS important to take the time to find things to do to help a carer. Even if it is as simple as organising a special morning tea for your friend and her mother once a week. Or doing the ironing for her. Whatever it is, its one less thing your friend has to worry about.

Hi, I'm trying to work out the best way to get the person we are caring for to get a second opinion on their treatment options - or at least let someone go with her to her doctor appointments so we all understand what's going on. She won't let anyone in with her when she has her doctor appointments. While I respect her privacy, I am concerned that she is not exploring all her options. Has anyone been in a similar situation?
