We have an online chat session each month (our most recent was last night) where we discuss things like the treatments and side effects we have experienced. I personally have found it most helpful as doctors don't always tell you everything. The ages of our group members cover a broad range, and we are all at various stages of treatment (just starting to annual check ups) so you should be able to find someone to connect with. Hi Daddysgirl, Unfortunately, the doctors have no idea how long your father may have left in this world, but please, make the most of whatever time you have available to spend time with him....you will be grateful that you did. I lost my mother to breast cancer in 1985. We had been told by the doctors that she had at least six months left....we lost her two weeks later. Mum too lost her appetite, and towards the end survived on a diet of raspberry lollies and Sustagen. They were all she could stomach. There were so many things that we would have liked to have done for and said to Mum before she died but we didn't get he time. Hi Max, I have recently returned from a trip to Thailand and had similar concerns about travel insurance before I went. You will be able to get travel insurance from most of the usual places, but you will find that they will not cover your 'pre-existing condition'. This does not mean that they will not include medical cover at all. It just means that if you fall ill due to your thyroid cancer or any other condition related to it, you will not be covered for treatment in Vietnam or the cost of emergency flights back to Australia. I chose to go with the travel insurance that my health fund provided, but there are many other places to source your insurance from. I hope you enjoy your birthday in Vietnam. I felt a bit like that myself. Now I volunteer to help on the Caner Council stalls on Pink Ribbon Day, etc and help the local committee with the admin for Relay for Life. It's my way of giving back and helping where I can. You may also consider a couple of visits to a Councellor to help you process everything in your own mind. The Cancer Council gave me the name and contact details for one in my local area who was experienced with helping cancer patients. If you do decide to have a few sessions, ask your GP for a Mental Health Plan. This will allow you to claim most of the cost back from Medicare (every little bit helps). Good luck with it all. That's great news Gail. I am so happy to hear your results were so good (almost identical to mine). I know how much of a relief you are feeling right now, but be prepared for your mind to kick into overdrive and second guess everything.....I know mine did. People call it 'survivors guilt', but I found myself thinking that surely I couldn't have gotten away from it all that easily. Are they sure that I didn't need just a short burst of chemo or radiation just to make sure it was all gone? The answer is, yes, you did and no, you don't. If any further measures were needed, your Oncologist would have made the arrangements for it to happen. For now, all you have to do is turn up for you monthly check-up with your Gynocological Oncologist and have your Pap smear and other checks. These will gradually move to every 2 months, 6 months, 12 months until you get told everything is all god and they don't need to see you anymore. Once again, congratulations on your results. Hi Glenys, As Kasianne said, it's all in the attitude you have in regards to the whole cancer thing. My mother had a radical mastectomy in the early 80's, but did not let "grandma's fake boob' get in the way of her setting out to fulfil her bucket list before they were trendy. Mum and her fake boob learned how to ride a horse at the age of 52 (getting thrown off the damn thing and all), toured Europe for 3 months doing many of the things much younger people do today, and generally just got on with living life. Her motto was "I don't know how much time I have left, but I'm going to fit in as much as I can in whatever time I have left".....and she did. Sadly, Mum lost her battle in 1985, but it was her attitude that got me through my diagnosis and treatment for Uterine cancer in 2011. Please try to focus on the positive areas of your journey as much as possible. Spend time with your family and friends. Hello Gaila, I hope your surgery goes well. I had mine in August 2011, with good results so I will keep my fingers crossed for you.
