Hi Ria, I had a very old regime of chemo,5fu and a drug called levamisole. Levamisole was a dreadful drug ,it was banned in 2000 because of fatal side effects. I had the 5fu via canula in the back of the hand every tuesday for 48 weeks . Every second week I would take 9 tablets of levamisole starting the day after the 5fu. Three a day for three days. It was a battle getting thru the chemo but when you stop at the end and the waiting begins you almost wish you were still having chemo. I used to have a scan every six months and a scope every year. I had six lymph nodes involved and very aggressive cancer. My surgeon did not believe I would beat it but I did. G'day, I was one of the lucky ones with colon ca. I lost half my colon and it was into 6 lymph nodes. I had some dreadful chemo. It was banned for human use not long after I had it for fatal side effects. I have just passed 15 years ca free. My fiend Virginia in NZ had the same deadly chemo . She had part of her colon removed and a wedge resection of her liver. She is 19 yrs ca free. I suspect that they will use chemo to try and knock out most of the ca in both your fathers livers then if possible resect the liver to remove the rest. Livers are unreal they regenerate in no time. Hi Kerry, Just this last week I have been corresponding with a friend in new zealand. I had st3c colon ca in 1998.I had surgery and a year of chemo and have been ca free for 15 years . Virginia and I were on the same chemo(no longer used) and we have stayed in touch. She had part of her colon removed and a wedge resection to remove liver mets. Hi June, it is also widely used in colorectal cancer. It seems to be one of the better chemo's as far as side effects are considered . Some of my friends have been on it for years off and on. Protein in the urine is a side effect that is monitored but it appears to be fairly low grade loss and ceases after the drug is stopped.Ron. ... View more

Sorry to hear that you have been dxed with colon ca. It is not a fun ride but depending on the stage it is quite survivable. I was dxed with stage three c into 6 lymph nodes. Here in Australia they use the Duke system so I was Dukes C. I had part of my transverse and descending colon removed followed by a year of chemotherapy. Don't worry about chemo yet ,in some dukes A and B they don't even use chemo just surgery. I was dxed in Jan 1998 so I am coming up for 15 years ca free and am considered cured.
