When we get diagnosed with cancer it is mind blowing and yet for family and friends it is equally so and yet in a different way. As each of us are in different roles it is hard to fathom just how it affects one another. We can empathise and yet because its not happening to us in that exact way we can never truely know what it is like. For instance my mother has had to cope twice now with her daughter's mortality being challenged. We talked and she commented that this time as she is much older it has been more difficult and she has felt more helpless.

Who am I now? Still a person, a woman, a partner, mother, daughter, sister, friend, teacher, urosomate, cancer survivor, me... I'm still me. My ostomy journey began in mid 2007 with bladder incontinence symptoms that were treated for UTIs and menopause for six months. Finally diagnosed in January 2008 with bladder cancer, I had a procedure to try to get the tumour out but it had invaded the bladder wall.

It does, doesn't it. Fear is right up there in the clouds and so many people live with the fear of cancer without ever having it. People who have developed it feel they can't talk about it, and friends sometimes drop away as if it is catching. It seems to take courage to talk about it and in many instances people turn away and don't want to know. Yet out in the big world there are other illnesses just as dangerous and terminal and we barely give them a thought until they hit us.

I am about to start my new weight loss program (radiotherapy). I starts next week and I am not particularly looking forward to it at all. However, do it I will! Is this where I insert determined? lol At times it is very difficult to keep on track and keep my thoughts where they need to be and yet that will get harder when the treatment is underway. I believe this is where our strength comes in ... mind over matter type stuff. So its time to dig deep and get on with it and it will be all finished before i know it.
